(Pap smear or liquid based cytology)

Pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. Regular pap smear can prevent cervical cancer by detecting early changes in the cervical cells before it becomes cancerous.

Preparation and procedure

  • Avoid intercourse, douching, or using any vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams for two days before having a pap smear.

  • Schedule a pap smear when you are not having menstrual period.

  • For a pap smear, you will need to undress from the waist down.

  • You'll lie on an exam table with your knees bent.

  • I will gently insert an instrument called a speculum into the vagina. Most of the time this procedure is not painful.

  • The sample from the cervix is then taken using a soft brush.

After procedure

  • You shouldn't feel any pain after the procedure. You may have some bleeding from the vagina.

  • The pap smear result will be ready within one week

  • I will call you if the result is abnormal and arrange for subsequent management.

  • You will get your result via email if it is normal
