HPV test

Persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection at the cervix is

known to cause cervical cancer. HPV test is the preferred way to screen for cervical cancers or pre-cancers in individuals 30 to 65 years with a cervix. 

Preparation and procedure

  • Avoid intercourse, douching, or using any vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams for two days before having a HPV test.

  • Schedule an HPV test when you are not having menstrual period.

  • For an HPV test, you will need to undress from the waist down.

  • You'll lie on an exam table with your knees bent. 

  • I will gently insert an instrument called a speculum into the vagina. Most of the time, this procedure is not painful.

  • The sample from the cervix is then taken using a soft brush.

After procedure & results

  • You shouldn't feel any pain after the procedure. You may have some bleeding from the vagina. 

  • The HPV test result will be ready within 2 weeks

  • I will call you if the result is abnormal and arrange for subsequent management.

  • You will get your result via email if it is normal
